Watercolors 24"x48" 2013 While exploring the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin we came across this idyllic fall vista. These rolling uplands offer spectacular views from every hilltop and their maze of valleys harbor white farm houses, red barns and grazing cows. This field was filled with hundreds of round hay bales nestled between the wooded hilltops dappled in their fall finest. To capture the scale and scope of this scene I painted this as a four foot wide watercolor. Influenced by the stylized paintings of Grant Wood, I simplified the shapes and the patterns in the hay bales and tree line. I contrasted the warmth of the fall colors with the cool colors of the hay bale wraps.
